  Pleyel Piano with Stunning, Louis XV, Vernis Martin Case at Besbrode Pianos Leeds:
 
Vernis Martin, a technique that epitomizes luxury and refinement, is the name of a lustrous lacquer used in the decoration of furniture, carriages (highly sought after by European royalty) and small items such as fans and boxes. The name is derived from a family of four French brothers Guillaume, Simon Etienne, Julien and Robert who developed techniques to mimic Oriental lacquers. During the late seventeenth century, Japanese lacquer and lower quality Chinese lacquers rose to the height of fashion. The high cost of importation lead to many Europeans to want to imitate this lustrous finish. The Martin brothers in Paris developed and refined techniques to produce their own varnishes. The chemical composition of these lacquers were guarded secrets. Individual workshops had their secret recipes. New colours were developed to mimic the popular red, black and gold lacquers. It was the introduction of color that one of the specificities of the French lacquer.
